South Lake Primary School

French

At South Lake Primary we believe that the learning of a modern foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and culture experience for our pupils. The intention of our French curriculum is to foster an interest in other cultures and languages, the ultimate aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond key stage 2

We use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to support us in our offering of a relevant, broad and vibrant foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. We will embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing which will draw on the foundations of our pupils’ oracy learning and extend their understanding of how language works.

KS1 and EYFS

Whilst it is not statutory to learn a modern foreign language before year 3, we strongly believe that the best language learning begins at an early age. Learning new sounds, listening to stories and appreciating songs in French will help our pupils gain confidence and give them the best possible chance at developing fluency from Year 3 upwards.  We begin by learning simple greetings and build on this each year. We identify where France is in the world and learn that French is spoken in many countries.

In addition, we have a progression document, which shows the skills and knowledge your child will be taught in each unit of work. Please click on the links below to see these.

Les Non Négociables (Our non-negotiables)

In addition to covering a variety of topics through the Language Angels scheme, we also believe in the importance of life skills. As French is our chosen language we have identified a set of non-negotiables (Les Non Négociables) which we believe every child should be confident in when they leave us for their secondary school journey. Not only will these prepare them for KS3 learning but they will also prepare them for visiting a French speaking country.
